Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Monoprion , -idian suffix.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Monoprion (see below; < mono- mono- comb. form + ancient Greek πρίων saw: see prion n.¹) + -idian suffix. Compare later diprionidian adj., tetraprionidian adj. at tetra- comb. form 1.J. Barrande Graptolites de Bohême (1850) divided the genus Graptolithus (containing most graptolites) into two sections, Monoprion and Diprion, containing forms with one or two rows of thecae respectively. These later became the basis of the two families Monoprionidae and Diprionidae (J. Hopkinson 1869, in Jrnl. Quekett Microsc. Club 1 157), now disused.

Palaeontology. Now chiefly historical.

Of a graptolite: having thecae on only one side of the axis; uniserial.
