Forms: 1500s– molle, 1800s mulli.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Partly a borrowing from Quechua. Etymons: Spanish molle; Quechua mulli.
Etymology: < American Spanish molle (1552) and its etymon Quechua mulli. Compare French molle, glossed by Cotgrave (1611) as ‘the name of an Indian tree, of whose tender branches wine is made’.
The Peruvian mastic or pepper tree, Schinus molle. Also molle tree.
