单词 molimo
释义

Molimon.1int.

Brit. /məˈdiːməʊ/, /məˈliːməʊ/, U.S. /məˈdimoʊ/, /məˈlimoʊ/, South African English /məˈdiːmɒ/, /mɒˈdiːmɒ/
Origin: A borrowing from Southern Sotho. Etymon: Southern Sotho molimo.
Etymology: < Southern Sotho molimo (medial -l- is not phonetically distinct from-d- , but is the spelling used), shortened < moholimo person who is in the sky < mo- , personal class prefix (see Modjadji n.) + holimo above, in the sky. Compare Modimo n., Morimo n.Variation between the forms Modimo, Molimo, and Morimo corresponds formally to the differing modern orthographies of the Sotho-Tswana languages. However, in English contexts, any of the forms may represent usage in any of the languages, since in earlier times the distribution of consonants /d/, /l/, and /r/ was not always clearly observed. Compare:1887 Jrnl. Anthropol. Inst. 16 79 Their [sc. the Bechuanas'] confusion with the letters D, L, and R, is..remarkable.1887 Jrnl. Anthropol. Inst. 16 80 The Sechuana word for God may be written Modimo, Morimo or Molimo.
South African.
Among the Sotho speakers of eastern and southern Africa: the supreme being, the Christian God. Also: a god, an ancestral spirit. Also as int. Cf. Modimo n.
