Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: mixo- comb. form, barbaric adj.
Etymology: < mixo- comb. form + barbaric adj., after ancient Greek μιξοβάρβαρος half Greek and half non-Greek. Compare post-classical Latin mixobarbaros (4th cent.), mixobarbarus (16th cent.). Compare also French mixtobarbare (1808 or earlier). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (mi:ksobăɹbæ·rik) /ˌmɪksəʊbɑːˈbærɪk/.
Ancient History. Obsolete. rare.
Characteristic of or belonging to a people partly Greek and partly non-Greek in origin. Cf. Mix-Hellene n.
