Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mitella.
Etymology: < classical Latin mitella female headdress, kind of sling < mitra mitra n. + -la , feminine of -lus , diminutive suffix (see -ella suffix and discussion s.v. -ellus suffix). In sense 2 after scientific Latin Mitella, genus name (Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 406, after J. Pitton de Tournefort Inst. Rei Herbariæ (ed. 3, 1719) I. 241). N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (mite·lă) /mɪˈtɛlə/.
1. Chiefly Surgery. A sling, esp. one used as a support for an injured arm. Obsolete.
