Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mitasses.
Etymology: < Canadian French mitasses, plural (1669; also in singular in forms mitas, mitasse, mittas, mittasse) < Old Algonquin mita:ss or Old Montagnais mita:s. Compare Montagnais mitash stocking.
Now historical.
With plural agreement. Leggings of a kind worn by north-eastern North American (esp. Canadian) Indians; a pair of such leggings.
