单词 absinthium
释义

absinthiumn.

Brit. /abˈsɪnθɪəm/, /əbˈsɪnθɪəm/, U.S. /æbˈsɪnθiəm/
Forms: Old English– absinthium, Middle English abscinthium, Middle English absinthij, 1600s–1700s absynthium.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin absinthium.
Etymology: < classical Latin absinthium, apsinthium wormwood, infusion or tincture of wormwood < ancient Greek ἀψίνθιον wormwood < Hellenistic Greek ἄψινθος wormwood (although this is apparently first attested later), of uncertain origin + -ιον , suffix forming nouns. Compare later absinth n. 1.The element -νθ- in Hellenistic Greek ἄψινθος indicates that the word is of pre-Hellenic origin. In form absinthij after the Latin genitive form.
The plant absinth (absinth n. 1a); (also) the dried leaves and flowering tops of the plant, esp. as an ingredient of drinks and herbal remedies. Formerly also †figurative (cf. absinth n. 2).
