Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French badigeon.
Etymology: < French badigeon (1690 in this sense; 1676 denoting a mixture used by sculptors consisting of plaster and the same stone from which a figure is carved), of unknown origin.
Now rare.
A preparation of powdered freestone, sawdust, or the like combined with a binding medium, used to cover defects and repair holes in stone, woodwork, etc. Also: a wash used to give plaster the appearance of stone.

1801 Repertory of Arts 15 420 Badigeon consists of quick-lime, yellow-ochre, and water; it keeps very well within doors, but it has no durability at all when exposed to the air.
1909 T. W. Bumpus Cathedrals & Churches Belgium vii. 239 The charming blue and yellow stone of their walls and pillars, and the red brick of their vaults, which paint, plaster and badigeon had so long obscured from view.
2007 Independent (Nexis) 15 Mar. 34 At Vif, the badigeon—or whitewash—was pasted directly over the paintings, covering them but also preserving them.
