Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: French misanthrope; Greek μισάνθρωπος.
Etymology: < French misanthrope (1548 as noun, 1564 as adjective in Middle French in Rabelais; 1622 in sense ‘unsociable person’; greatly popularized by the title of Molière's play Le misanthrope (1666)) and its etymon ancient Greek μισάνθρωπος Misanthropos n. Compare earlier Misanthropos n., misanthropist n.
