Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Perhaps partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: absinth n., -ine suffix1; Latin absinthium , -ine suffix1; absinthe n., -ine suffix1.
Etymology: Originally < absinth n. or its ultimate etymon classical Latin absinthium absinthium n. + -ine suffix1. In later use also < absinthe n. + -ine suffix1. Compare Byzantine Greek ἀψίνθινος flavoured with wormwood.
