Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown.The second element has apparently been assimilated to the plural of lock n.1 (compare mermaid's hair n. at mermaid n. Compounds 2). In form bladderlocks apparently by association with bladder-wrack n. at bladder n. Compounds 2. Compare also dabberlack (late 19th cent.), dabberlocks (mid 20th cent. onwards) denoting the same plant, and probably a metathetic variant of the present word.
Chiefly Scottish.
A brown seaweed, Alaria esculenta (family Alariaceae), found on North Atlantic coasts, with ribbon-like fronds which are collected locally as food.
