释义

miskenningn.

Brit. /ˌmɪsˈkɛnɪŋ/, U.S. /ˌmɪsˈkɛnɪŋ/
Forms: late Old English meskenninge (in a late copy), late Old English miskaenning, late Old English miskennigg (in a late copy), late Old English miskennyng (in a late copy), late Old English myskennyng (in a late copy), late Old English–Middle English mischennynge, late Old English (in a late copy)–Middle English miskenninge, Middle English mescheninge, Middle English meskeninge, Middle English mischenninge, Middle English misconynge, Middle English miskennigh, Middle English miskennynge, Middle English miskenyng, Middle English miskenynge, Middle English miskerming (transmission error), Middle English mixkennyng, Middle English muskenning, Middle English myskennynge, Middle English myskenynge, Middle English 1600s–1700s 1900s– miskenning, 1700s miskonning.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: mis- prefix1, ken v.1, -ing suffix1.
Etymology: Apparently < mis- prefix1 + ken v.1 + -ing suffix1. Compare later kenning n.2, misken v.Compare also post-classical Latin miskenninga, mescheninga, etc., attested in several English sources (see quots.) and clearly a borrowing from late Old English:a1133 Royal Charter: Henry I to Citizens of London in F. Liebermann Gesetze der Angelsachsen (1903) I. 525 Et amplius non sit miskenninga [v.r. meskenninge] in hustenge neque in folkesmote.1136 Royal Charter: Stephen on Liberties of Eng.
Law. Now historical.
A mistake or variation in pleading before a court. Also: a fine exacted for this; the right to collect such fines.Found in several alleged Old English charters of Edward the Confessor preserved in late copies (cf. quots. lOE, a1200). These are, however, ‘Westminster writs of doubtful authenticity, or spurious’ (F. E. Harmer Anglo-Saxon Writs (1952) 82). The writs may be based on original charters, with the content altered and expanded in the 12th cent. The occurrence of miskenning in these charters is probably anachronistic.
