Origin: Apparently from a proper name. Etymon: proper name Ballyhooly.
Etymology: Apparently < Ballyhooly (Irish Baile Átha hÚlla ), the name of a village in County Cork, Ireland, apparently formerly notorious for faction fighting, although this may reflect a later rationalization of the word. Compare slightly later Ballyhack n. and also later ballyhoo n.2, and discussion at those entries.
Chiefly Irish English.
