Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps from a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Bally- , English hack , heck n.³ and int.

Etymology: Origin uncertain; a derivation < Bally-, a frequent first element of place-names in Ireland ( < Irish baile town, village: see ballyboe n.) + hack, variant of heck n.³ and int., has been suggested, but neither the relative chronology of attestation nor the forms of heck n.³ and int. appear to support this suggestion. There is a village named Ballyhack in Co. Wexford, Ireland, but the connection, if any, is unclear. Compare slightly earlier ballyhooly n. (which is apparently < a place name), of which the present word may perhaps show an alteration. Perhaps compare also discussion at malahack v.

U.S. regional (chiefly New England) (euphemistic). Now rare.

Hell.Used in exclamatory and imprecatory phrases in which hell is more common.
