Etymology: < Irish baile bó (now hist.) < baile place, town, townland, unit of land measurement (Early Irish baile ; of uncertain origin, perhaps < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek ϕωλεός den, lair: see pholas n.) + bó cow n.¹, perhaps with reference to the amount of land needed to graze a certain number of cows. Compare e.g. early modern Irish baile chongmhas trí ched bó place to support 300 cows (17th cent. or earlier).
