Etymology: Euphemistic alteration of bloody adj. (compare bloody adj. 8), perhaps influenced by ball n.1 (compare ball n.1 12). With the use as adverb compare bloody adv. 2.In quot. 1847 with allusion to Irish place names in Bally- (see ballyboe n.).
slang (now somewhat dated).

As a vague intensive (usually as a euphemism for bloody): confounded, dashed, blasted. Cf. absoballylutely at absolutely int. 2.
