Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mission civilisatrice.
Etymology: < French mission civilisatrice (late 19th cent.) < mission mission n. + civilisatrice , feminine form (compare -trice suffix) corresponding to civilisateur < civiliser civilize v. + -ateur -ator suffix.Not fully naturalized in English.
Now chiefly historical.
The perceived calling of (former) imperial powers to introduce civilization into their colonies; spec. with reference to French colonial policy in Africa and Indo-China.
