Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French mirifique; Latin mīrificus.
Etymology: < Middle French, French mirifique causing wonder or admiration, amazing (late 15th cent. in form mirificque ) and its etymon classical Latin mīrificus < mīrus wonderful (see miracle n.) + -ficus -fic suffix. Compare Italian mirifico (a1375), Portuguese mirífico (15th cent.), Spanish mirífico (early 17th cent.).
That works wonders; exciting wonder or astonishment; marvellous. Also (humorously) in weakened sense.
