Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi mirc.
Etymology: < Hindi mirc pepper, chilli < Sanskrit marica the pepper plant, pepper, apparently < an unrelated language of South East Asia (perhaps compare Khasi mrit, Khmer mrec pepper).
1. In Indian cookery: a pepper, esp. a hot pepper or chilli; (also) chilli powder.
