Etymology: < French ballotter to shake (a person or thing) to and fro, to toss (a person or thing) hither and thither (like a ball) (1611 in Cotgrave), to move in response to ballottement (1852 or earlier; apparently rare in this sense) < ballotte ballot n.1 With sense 2 compare earlier ballottement n.
