Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Mirabilit.
Etymology: < German Mirabilit ( W. Haidinger Handb. der bestimmenden Mineral. (1845) 488) < classical Latin mīrābilis (see marvel n.1; after use in post-classical Latin sal mirabile: see sal mirabile n. at sal n.1 Compounds) + German -it -ite suffix1. Compare Italian mirabilite (1934).
Mineralogy.
Native hydrated sodium sulphate, Na2SO4·10H2O, a monoclinic mineral usually occurring as colourless prisms or massive deposits, esp. near salt springs or lakes, and in caves. Also called Glauber's salt.
