Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mirabilis annus.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin mirabilis annus wonderful year (1564 in C. Leowitz De coniunctionibus magnis insignioribus superiorum planetarum sig. N iij^v, or earlier) < classical Latin mīrābilis mirable adj. + annus year (see annals n.). Compare later annus mirabilis n.The Latin phrase seems to be attested earliest in a Latin translation of some German verses containing a prophecy relating to the year 1588 (which occur in C. Leowitz Ephemeridum nouum atque insigne opus (1557)). In these German verses there is no direct German equivalent to mirabilis annus.

Obsolete. rare.

A year of extraordinary events, esp. when regarded as omens or portents. Cf. annus mirabilis n.
