单词 mistral
释义

mistraln.

Brit. /ˈmɪstr(ə)l/, /mᵻˈstrɑːl/, U.S. /ˈmɪstr(ə)l/, /məˈstrɑl/
Forms: 1600s mestrall, 1700s maestral, 1800s– mistral. Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mistral.
Etymology: < French mistral (1625), †maestral (1606), †maistral (1552 in Middle French), †mestral (1544 in Middle French) wind from the north-west, also in sense ‘the north-west’ (c1525) < Old Occitan maestral the north-west (end of the 15th cent.), maistral mistral (1508; Occitan maiestrau , maïstrau , mistrau , mistral ) < classical Latin magistrālis magistral n. In spite of the earliest attested senses in Middle French and Old Occitan, the underlying sense is usually taken to be ‘master-wind’ and hence ‘wind blowing from the north-west’ (the mistral); compare Catalan mestral wind from the north-west (1375), Spanish maestral wind from the north-west (1495), Italian maestrale maestrale n. Compare also Old Occitan maistre , maestre wind from the north-west (13th cent.), Catalan maestre , mestre wind from the north-west (c1300), Old French maistre the north-west (c1305; see master n.1), Italian maestro maestro n. 2. N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciations (mi·străl, mistrā·l) /ˈmɪstrəl/ /mɪˈstrɑːl/.
