Etymology: < classical Latin Minyae and its etymon ancient Greek Μινύαι (see Minyae n.) + -an suffix.In quot. 1598 at sense B. 1a in fact translating the ancient Greek adjective Μινύειος. The 19th-cent. form Minyean/mɪnɪˈiːən/ with four syllables is after this ancient Greek adjective.

A member of an ancient people, said to have inhabited or originated in parts of central Greece (chiefly Orchomenus in Boeotia and Iolchus in Thessaly), with whom the legends concerning Jason and the Argonauts are associated.

The quorum of ten males over the age of thirteen required for formal public worship in Orthodox Judaism.Conservative and Reform Judaism have modified this custom, allowing women to be counted for a minyan.
