Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Italian. Or (ii) formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: Italian minuendo , minuire ; diminuendo n.
Etymology: Either < Italian minuendo diminishing, gerund of minuire to diminish (a1342) < classical Latin minuere (see minuend n.), or shortened < diminuendo n.Apparently not attested in Italian as a musical direction, although Florio (1598) gives as an additional sense for Italian minuire ‘to favour the voice in singing, as it were to fall from the highest to the lowest’.
