Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese Minseitō.
Etymology: < Japanese †Minseitō ( < minsei democracy, civil government ( < min- (see mingei n.) + -sei government, rule) + party; all < Middle Chinese), shortened < the official title Rikken Minseitō Constitutional Democratic Party ( < Rikken constitutional + Minseitō).The word occurs earliest in an English context in the fuller form Rikkenminseito:1927 Trans-Pacific 30 Apr. 12/5 Supporters of the movement for a new political party in Japan, composed of members of all opposition parties, Thursday decided..that the name of the new party shall be Rikkenminseito (Constitutional Democratic Political Party).

In Japan: the Constitutional Democratic Party, formed in 1927 and disbanded in 1940.
