Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French menouresse, meneuresse.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman menouresse (in frere-menouresse , with frere friar n. as first element) and Middle French meneuresse (1340 in sereur meneuresse , with sereur , variant of seror sister (French sœur ) as first element) < menour minor n. + -esse -ess suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin minorissa (1294; from a1307 in British sources).The convent of the Franciscan nuns outside Aldgate gave its name to the Minories, a street still existing in the City of London.
Now chiefly historical.
A Franciscan nun of the second order; a Poor Clare. Also Sister Minoress (chiefly in plural, in the names of Franciscan institutions).
