Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Mitochondrion.
Etymology: < German Mitochondrion (in plural in C. Benda 1898, in Arch. f. Anat. u. Physiol.: Physiol. Abt. 397) < mito- (see mito- comb. form) + ancient Greek χονδρίον granule < χόνδρος (see chondro- comb. form) + -ιον, diminutive suffix. Compare French mitochondrie (1901; 1898 in form mitochondria).In plural form in early examples.
Cell Biology.
A self-replicating organelle present, often in large numbers, in the cytoplasm of almost all eukaryotic cells, consisting of an outer smooth membrane surrounding an intricately folded inner membrane, and acting as the major site of cellular respiration and energy production.
