Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps Ii) a borrowing from Latin. Or perhaps (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin mitigabilis ; Latin mītigāre , -ble suffix.
Etymology: Perhaps < post-classical Latin mitigabilis (c1250 in a British source; compare mitigabiliter , adverb, 5th cent.), or perhaps independently < classical Latin mītigāre mitigate v. + -ble suffix. Compare earlier immitigable adj. and unmitigable adj.
Susceptible to or permitting mitigation.
