Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Mithriacus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Mithriacus (early 4th cent., modifying sacra (plural) rites) < Hellenistic Greek Μιθριακός (modifying μυστήριον mystery) < Μιθρ- (in Μίθρας : see Mithras n.) + -ιακός , suffix formed from reanalysis of nouns in -ια + suffix -ακός (see -ac suffix). Compare French mithriaque (1721 as noun, 1765 as adjective). Compare also earlier Mithraic adj.
