Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Mithrās.
Etymology: < classical Latin Mithrās, Mithrēs, ancient Greek Μίθρας < an Indo-Iranian divine name attested as Old Persian Mithra , Avestan Mithra (compare Sanskrit Mitra , one of the gods of the Vedic pantheon; also as mitra in sense ‘friend, companion, associate’: see Maitreya n.). Compare Middle French, French Mithra (1576 in the passage translated in quot. 1585; 1572 as Mithres in the passage translated in quot. 1603).Forms in -s are used primarily in classical contexts and forms without in Persian ones, though the distinction is not consistently maintained. The form Mythra in quot. 1551 may have arisen from the interpretation of Latin Mythram in More as an accusative corresponding to a nominative form Mythra.
