Origin: A borrowing from Mandan. Etymon: Mandan wrítari.
Etymology: < Mandan wrítari Hidatsa < Hidatsa miríta:ri, lit. ‘crosses the water’.The Mandan form can also be transcribed phonetically as minítari. The following quotation shows the normal Hidatsa substitution of w for m in rapid speech:1804 W. Clark Jrnl. 12 Nov. in Jrnls. Lewis & Clark Exped. (1987) III. 233 They [sc. the Mandans] moved up near the watersoons & winataree where they now live in peace with those nations.

1873 W. Matthews Gram. & Dict. Lang. Hidatsa p. v The Hidatsa, Minnetaree, or Grosventre Indians are one of the three tribes which..inhabit the permanent village at Fort Berthold..and hunt on the waters of the upper Missouri and Yellowstone rivers.

1805 W. Clark Jrnl. 17 May in Jrnls. Lewis & Clark Exped. (1904) II. viii. 44 I saw a fortified Indian camp, which I suppose is one of the camps of the Minetarre war party..that set out..to war against the Blackfoot Indians.
a1822 J. Richardson Jrnl. in J. Franklin Narr. Journey Shores Polar Sea (1823) 108 The..Fall Indians, so named from their former residence on the falls of the Saskatchawan. They are the Minetarres.
1854 Proc. Philol. Soc. 6 85 These Arapaho or Atsina Indians are those who are also (though inconveniently or erroneously) called the Gros Ventres, the Big Bellies and the Minitares of the Prairie.
1961 Amer. Heritage Bk. Indians 336/1 Misreading the sign talk, early traders often called the Atsina by the various names of Minnetarees or Gros Ventres.
