Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Minié.
Etymology: < the name of Captain Claude-Étienne Minié (1804–79), French soldier, who invented the Minié bullet in 1849. N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (mi·nie) /ˈmɪnɪeɪ/.
