Etymology: < minister v. + -er suffix1. Compare Anglo-Norman ministrour official, administrator (14th–15th centuries), Old French menestreur (12th–13th centuries; subsequently in sense ‘minstrel’). Compare ministrator n. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mi·nistrəɹ) /ˈmɪnɪstrə(r)/.
