Etymology: < post-classical Latin ministerialis ministerial n.See J. F. Niermeyer Mediae Latinitatis Lex. Minus (1976) at ministerialis for documentation on the range of functionaries, retainers, and officials denoted by this word.
Medieval History.
In certain feudal systems, notably in Germany: a non-noble retainer or official, originally of unfree status, with obligations of household and military service to his lord. Cf. ministerial adj. 2.
