释义

motivon.

Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian motivo.
Etymology: < Italian motivo reason, cause, motive (a1342), distinctive or salient feature of a literary work (a1651), musical subject, figure, motif (a1729) < post-classical Latin motivum motive n. Compare motif n., motive n.Sense 1 is derived ultimately from a specific use in a musical context of the Italian phrase motivo di cadenza intention (to play) a cadence. The sense ‘deliberate delay’ appears in de Brossard's Dictionnaire de Musique (1701) and is carried over into Grassineau's translation (see quot. 1740 at sense 1). N.E.D.
