Etymology: < Canadian French Mistassins, plural (1640; also in Old Montagnais plural form Mistasiniouek, 1644; in 19th cent. standardized as Mistassini), shortened < Old Montagnais mistasini:wak^y, lit. ‘people of the great rock’, referring to a large rock in Lac Mistassini, called in Mistassini East Cree mistasiniy, mistasinii great stone, which is also the name of Mistassini Post.In later use directly < the name of Lac Mistassini. The Old Montagnais plural form Mistasiniouek occasionally occurs in English in historical contexts; there are also isolated uses in the 19th cent. of other forms based on the French of Jesuit missionaries. The official name of the band is now the Cree Nation of Mistissini.
