Etymology: < Anglo-Norman mesconissant and Middle French mescognoissant, mesconoissant, mesconissant, use as adjective of present participle of Anglo-Norman mesconustre, mesconistre and Middle French mescognoistre, mesconoistre to be ignorant, to not recognize, appreciate, or acknowledge, to ignore, disregard (12th cent. in Old French; French méconnaître ) < mes- mis- prefix2 + conustre , cognoistre , conoistre (see conusant adj.). Compare later miscognize v., conusant adj.
Obsolete.
Not cognizant, knowledgeable, or aware; ignorant of something; spec. ignorant of the law, or some aspect of it.
