Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: miniature n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < miniature n. + -ist suffix, in senses 1 and 2 after French miniaturiste (1748 in sense 1; 1843 in sense 2 in passage translated in quot. 1851 at sense 2). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mi·niătiurist, mi·nitiŭrist) /ˈmɪnɪətjʊrɪst/ /ˈmɪnɪtjʊərɪst/.
