Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin; perhaps modelled on an Italian lexical item. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: Latin miniator ; miniate v., -or suffix.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin miniator (15th cent. in a British source, 15th–16th centuries in continental sources; < classical Latin miniāt- , past participial stem of miniāre (see miniate v.) + -or -or suffix), or independently < miniate v. + -or suffix, perhaps after Italian miniatore (a1406; compare quot. 1849). Compare Middle French miniateur (1567; from 1660 in French denoting a painter of miniatures), Spanish †miniador (1599 in Minsheu, glossed ‘a limner’). Compare slightly earlier miniaturist n. 2.
A person who miniates a manuscript; a rubricator, an illuminator.
