Etymology: < Japanese mingei (Muneyoshi Yanagi 1926, in M. Yanagi et al. Nihon Mingei Bijutsukan Setsuritsu Shuisho ‘Prospectus to establish a Japanese folk-craft museum’) < min- people + -gei arts and crafts (both < Middle Chinese), probably as a shortening of a longer phrase.Yanagi was much influenced by the English craftsman William Morris and other exponents of the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late 19th cent.; the Japanese term mingei is probably partly after English popular art (see popular adj. 7b) and partly after arts and crafts n. His own translation of mingei was ‘folk-craft(s)’, e.g. in the title of Folk-Crafts in Japan (1936).
