Etymology: < middle adj. + erd n., after middenerd n. (compare β forms s.v.). Compare Old Saxon middilgard , middilgarda , Old High German mittilagart , mittilgart . Compare later middle earth n.In some later Middle English forms, chiefly from the north, the east midlands, and East Anglia, the second element is indistinguishable from identical forms of earth n.1 (compare β forms s.v.); some of these forms may rather belong at middle earth n.).
Obsolete.
The world, the earth, regarded as a middle region between heaven and hell; (also) the inhabitants or things of the world, esp. as opposed to those of heaven; worldly things as opposed to divine or spiritual things. Cf. middenerd n., middle earth n.Quot. a1425 is a late copy of a charter of 869 or 870, but the word middelerd is probably a Middle English substitution.
