Etymology: < Italian balcōne (= French balcon, Provençal balcon, Spanish balcon, Portuguese balcão), formed with augmentative suffix -one from Italian balco, palco, scaffold, < Old High German balcho, palcho (= modern German balken, English balk) a beam. Till c1825 the pronunciation was regularly bælˈkəʊnɪ; but ˈbælkənɪ (once in Swift), ‘which,’ said Samuel Rogers, ‘makes me sick,’ is now established.
