Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: milliard n., -aire suffix.
Etymology: < milliard n. + -aire suffix. In quot. 1897 after Dutch milliardair (1889), itself probably after French milliardaire (although this is perhaps first attested slightly later: 1890 or earlier).
Now rare.
A person possessing a thousand million pounds (dollars, etc.); an immensely wealthy person.
