Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mid adj., feather n.
Etymology: < mid adj. + feather n. (compare feather n. 15).Recorded in Eng. Dial. Dict. s.v. mid adj. and n. from Cheshire in senses ‘a narrow ridge of land between two pits’, ‘the plates running between the fire and parallel to the sides of the pan in salt-making’, and from Yorkshire in senses ‘the principal timber at the bottom of the cart’, ‘the posts against which folding-doors are shut’.
1. A thin structure dividing or partitioning the interior of a furnace, flue, etc. (see quots.). Also (Joinery): = cross-tongue n.
