Etymology: < Minamata, the name of the town in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, where the disease was first caused by emissions from the Chisso acetaldehyde-synthesizing plant in 1953 + disease n., after Japanese Minamata-byō.
Medicine.
A form of encephalopathy producing sensory loss in the extremities, ataxia, loss of sight and hearing, dysarthria, and other symptoms (and in the most severe cases dementia and death), caused by organic mercury compounds ingested in contaminated food or water or in breast milk from affected mothers.
