Etymology: < (probably spurious) post-classical Latin mison (see below).Turnebus ( Adversariorum (1599) XI. xiiii. 334) emends the text of Pliny (compare quot. 1601²) < misy (see misy n.) to mison on the basis of ancient Greek μῖσον in Athenaeus ( Deipnosophistai 2. 60 = Theophrastus, Fragment 167), but modern editions of this text have μίσυ.
