单词 millefleurs
释义

millefleursn.

Brit. /ˌmiːlˈfləː/, U.S. /ˌmilˈflər/
Forms: 1800s millefleuer, 1800s– millefleur, 1800s– millefleurs.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French millefleurs.
Etymology: < French millefleurs perfume distilled from different flowers (attested only from 1874, but compare earlier rossoli de mille fleurs cordial of distilled flowers (1718)) < mille thousand ( < classical Latin mīlle : see milli- comb. form) + fleurs , plural of fleur flower n. Compare Italian millefiori a cordial of distilled flowers (1780 in acquavite di mille fiori). Compare also French eau de millefleurs cow urine used as a remedy (1663; similarly Italian acqua di millefiori), so called because the liquid was believed to have the properties of the flowers eaten by the cows.Sense 2 is not recorded in French dictionaries. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (milflȫr) /milflœr/.
