Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Microsporon, Microsporum.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Microsporon, genus name (D. Gruby 1844, in Comptes rendus de l'Acad. des Sciences 18 585), alteration of the earlier name Microsporum Microsporum n.Gruby gives no indication of the reason for his change from Microsporum to Microsporon. For most of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the name Microsporon was preferred, but the rules of taxonomic nomenclature make Microsporum the correct form in modern use.

Medicine and Mycology. Now rare.

Any member of the genus Microsporum of fungi (see Microsporum n.); (in form Microsporon) the genus itself (now historical).
