Etymology: < Italian microsomia ( V. Malacarne De' mostri umani de' caratteri fondamentali (1798) 18) < micro- micro- comb. form + ancient Greek σῶμα body (see soma n.²) + -ia -ia suffix¹. Compare macrosomia n. R. G. Mayne (see quot. 1857 at sense 1) gives a French form microsomie.

1. Abnormally small size of the body (dwarfism); (in full microsomia fetalis) abnormally small size of the fetus for gestational age. Cf. macrosomia n. rare. Perhaps Obsolete.
